RPGaDay 2016 - Day 13

August 13 - What makes a successful campaign?

Discounting "fun" as the only real "right answer" this one becomes a little perspective based. It'll depend on the game, game system, and the group. I think that in general however a good campaign can be managed by:

  • Having connections between individual sessions. Not every session needs to connect to the campaign "story" but at least 50% ought to in my opinion
  • Giving every character, including key NPCs, a moment to shine. PCs should have a real standout moment, where the spotlight is firmly on them, at least every few sessions.
  • Play to an end, and end strong. You can always "renew for another season" with these characters if you want, but you shouldn't expect a 10 year long campaign during session #1.

August 12 - What game is your group most likely to play next? Why?

Discounting active campaigns I think the next most likely campaign I'll be involved in will be Gods of the Fall for Cypher System, by Monte Cook Games. I've been excited for it for a while and now that it's released I'm working on writing an adventure for publishing and enjoying the play testing process immensely because the game is so dynamic. Characters can choose any domain for their deity and really create characters that hit a personal sweet spot, while the game is designed to facilitate a good campaign style play as characters reach for goodhood.

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 11

August 11 - Which gamer most affected the way you play?

I don't think this has an answer. I change the way I play to the group I play with and the game I am playing. I can be silly and goofy or serious and dramatic. The closest answer I could give would be a childhood freind, Shawn, who introduced me to RPGs in the first place. I don't know if I would be a gamer had he not acted as the "infection vector" for RPGs by introducing me to Rifts.

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 10

August 10 - Largest in-game surprise you have experienced?

Learning the true reason why my amnesiac character had his own memories wiped. The GM had built an interesting story involving my character, another PC, and an NPC that allowed for things moving forward of the reveal to be as interesting as the lead up to it. I don't want to go into details, but the whole thing played out in a play-by-post game that felt less like an RPG and more like a co-op novel.

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 9

August 9 - Beyond the game, what's involved in an ideal session?

Jokes. Good food and/or drink. A short (or no) drive home. All are nice to have, but so long as you have the game and some good friends the rest is icing.

August 8 - Hardcover, softcover, digital? What is your preference?

Hardcover. Assuming budget is no issue and the quality is good hardcover books just feel best in hand and last longest. Paperback when hardcover isn't available, at least at the table. PDF has its advantages and worth, and are indispensable for reference and travel.

So basically all have their purpose, but hardcover is favorite.

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 7

Source: http://www.brigadecon.org/rpgaday2016/

August 7 - What aspect of RPGs has had the biggest effect on you?

With the advent of social media I would have to say community. Community is what spurred me to start this blog (both times). Community has given me a place to meet other players and has resulted in me gaining new gaming groups via online play and chat.
